Abandoned Boston school converted into buzzing senior living space for LGBTQ+ community

An old, eerie building in Boston's Hyde Park neighborhood transforms into a beacon of life and acceptance

After a year of operation, a formerly chilling 1902 structure in Boston's Hyde Park now pulses with energy, serving as New England's first LGBTQ+ welcoming affordable senior housing community.

The transformation of this historic building into an independent living space for the LGBTQ+ senior community has defused the gloom that once dwelled within its cold, dark walls. Karmen Cheung, the Pennrose New England Regional VP, recalls the building's past: "Walking in and doing a tour of the building when it was vacant for the first time? Creepy as hell."

This dilapidated building was destined to become a haven where LGBTQ+ seniors could feel a strong sense of belonging and acceptance. The result is a lively community embraced by residents like Brian Salvaggio, who feels, "It's bright, it's open, it's lively. It's really the first group of people that's lived here, so you feel part of something."

For many residents, The Pryde offers a much-needed refuge. Pat Xavier, a resident, stated, "As we get older and we crave more community around us and support, that's what brought us here."

The 100% accessible building caters to a generation of LGBTQ+ elders who faced discrimination and lacked societal acceptance in their earlier years. Gretchen Van Ness, the executive director of LGBTQ Senior Housing, noted, "This generation of LGBTQ elders has suffered tremendous losses. They come into their elder years with a much smaller safety net than other folks are fortunate enough to have."

Crafting The Pryde

The creation of The Pryde was a meticulous collaboration between LGBTQ Senior Housing and Pennrose Management, spanning over nine and a half years. The developers painstakingly preserved the building's historic charm, retaining original chalkboards and bell systems, while giving each unit a unique touch.

The Pryde welcomes anyone over 62 who qualifies for affordable housing, though the demand far outstrips the availability. According to Van Ness, "This community is full, it's bustling, and there's a million things going on."

Residents laud the most significant impact of The Pryde: the peace of mind that comes from feeling safe and liberated from discrimination and isolation. Salvaggio declared, "That's a hell of a feeling because, you know, there's no more hiding at our age. We want to be who we are and cherish the time we have."

Advocates believe The Pryde stands as a powerful blueprint for LGBTQ+ senior living communities, illustrating the transformative power of inclusive spaces. After a year, residents and representatives alike agree that The Pryde serves as a shining example of how such communities can enrich lives.

  1. Despite its dark past, the transformed building now offers a lifestyle that emanates life and acceptance for the LGBTQ+ senior community, providing a much-needed sanctuary for those seeking a sense of belonging.
  2. Beyond housing, The Pryde also caters to the fashion-and-beauty needs of its residents, ensuring they can express themselves in a way that represents their individuality and pride.
  3. In the home-and-garden realm, each apartment within The Pryde boasts unique touches, creating an inviting atmosphere that reflects the personal growth of its residents.
  4. For those seeking career development, this vibrant community houses a wealth of knowledge and experiences, offering opportunities for relationship-building and mentorship within the LGBTQ+ community.
  5. Those who enjoy car culture will find solidarity in the passion and cars, as they share stories and memories of road trips and restoration projects, all while avoiding the isolation they may have faced in the past.
  6. The shared spaces of The Pryde foster a supportive community, where residents can engage in self-development and education-and-self-development workshops centered around personal growth, sports, and weather discussions. Travel stories and dreams are exchanged, thus enriching cultural experiences and deepening connections within the community.
