Travelers planning their summer getaways may want to take note of some recent statistics and advice from Yvonne Bonanati, a representative from KAYAK. Bonanati advises considering alternative travel dates to avoid crowds and potential price increases, as ticket prices often rise with demand.

In 2024, several popular destinations experienced high delay rates. Flights returning from Antalya, Lisbon, Mallorca, and Miami all had issues, with Antalya seeing a delay rate of 53% and an average delay of 38 minutes. Lisbon and Mallorca each had a delay rate of 45%, but the average delay was not specified. Miami flights had an average delay of 40 minutes.

Interestingly, evening flights (11 p.m.) had the highest delay rate in 2024, with a rate of 58%. On the other hand, early morning flights (6 a.m.) had the lowest delay rate, at just 14%. Afternoons (3 p.m.) also had a high delay rate, with a rate of 54%.

When it comes to German airports, Munich had the highest percentage of flight delays in 2024 among German airports, with 49% of all departures delayed, on average by 35 minutes. Cologne and Frankfurt am Main also had high numbers of flight delays, with rates of 45% and 44%, respectively, and average delays of 36 minutes and 33 minutes, respectively.

However, smaller German airports, such as Bremen, had fewer flight delays in 2024 compared to larger airports. Only 17% of flights were delayed, on average by 18 minutes.

Looking ahead to the summer of 2025, several days are forecasted to be particularly heavily frequented. June 6 and 7, as well as August 1 and 2, are expected to see high volumes of travelers. In June 2025, 39% of flights are forecasted to have delayed departures, and in August, the forecasted rate is 37%.

In Germany, the most flight delays at the largest airports during the summer of 2025 are typically expected in July and August due to high passenger volumes and operational challenges. Particular issues have been noted around mid-July, caused by disruptions such as train strikes affecting connectivity. No specific exact dates are given, but mid-summer is the peak period for delays.

Travelers planning trips to or from Munich, Cologne, and Frankfurt should be aware of these potential delays and consider adjusting their travel plans accordingly. By choosing alternative travel dates and times, travelers may be able to avoid the crowds and potential delays, making for a smoother and more enjoyable journey.
