Ben Wise Leads Southeast Sawfish Fishery Improvement Project

Ben Wise, alongside WWF and the skipper of the 'Nungurner', is leading a fishery initiative for the Southeast Sawfish. This project aims to protect the species and enhance sustainability in the face of increasing seafood demand.

The project, focusing on the South East Trawl Fishery, seeks to reduce harmful interactions with bird life and improve catch data management. Simple measures like windy-buoys and e-logbooks are being implemented to achieve these goals.

In 2011, a concerning 29% of global fish stocks were overfished, with over 60% fished to their full capacity. This highlights the urgent need for improved management practices. The Marine Stewardship Council's certification standard serves as a crucial guideline for maintaining sustainable fishing and preserving marine life health and abundance.

Ben Wise's project, supported by WWF and the 'Nungurner' skipper, is a step towards enhancing the sustainability of the Southeast Sawfish fishery. By adopting simple yet effective measures and aligning with the MSC's standards, the initiative aims to protect the species and promote sustainable fishing practices.
