Brisbane Couple Finds Affordable Housing on Houseboat
A couple, Grant and Louise Cause, have found an innovative solution to Brisbane's housing crisis. They've been living on a houseboat for 14 months, moored at Dockside Marina in the city.
The couple made this decision after their monthly rent for a two-bedroom apartment doubled. They now pay mooring fees, insurance, and maintenance for their houseboat, finding it cheaper than their previous rent. Despite its size, their houseboat offers all the comforts of a two-bedroom apartment, including a laundry. Grant and Louise have embraced this lifestyle, making friends with the marina community and planning to travel up the coast. They spent $250,000 on the houseboat, which they consider a sound investment compared to renting. Louise finds no downsides to this lifestyle, appreciating the room, public transport access, community, and views of Riverfire.
Grant and Louise's decision to live on a houseboat has saved them approximately $10,400 per year compared to renting a city apartment. They enjoy their new lifestyle and community, with plans to continue this way of life long-term.
