Britain Battles Covid Surge: New Variants Double Infections
Britain is grappling with a surge in Covid-19 cases due to two new variants, XFG (Stratus) and NB.1.8.1 (Nimbus), which have doubled infections since August. Health chiefs have launched a winter vaccination drive, urging millions to get Covid and flu news as hospitalisations creep up.
The new variants, while not posing a bigger threat than previous strains, may make infections more likely. Positivity rates have risen from 7.6 to 8.4 per cent in a week, and admissions have increased from 2.0 to 2.73 per 100,000. Experts advise wearing masks, improving indoor air quality, and isolating if infected to protect others from the virus.
The increase in cases is attributed to children returning to school, colder temperatures, and waning immunity. Symptoms of the new variants include headache, coughing, runny nose, hoarse voice, sore throat, persistent dry coughs, tiredness, and fever.
Britons are urged to wear masks in crowded public spaces and isolate if they test positive for Covid due to a spike in Covid news of the two new variants. Professor Lawrence Young, a virologist, finds the increase in cases and hospitalisations 'worrying' as it's happening early in the Autumn period.
