The growing preference for independent living, staying in personal dwellings, and impromptu holiday location switches is on the rise, particularly among a specific community.

The vibe is unmistakably leaning towards the mobile lodging on four wheels. This year alone, we zoomed past the milestone of one million registered motorhomes, essentially doubling the fleet since 2017.

Fiat Ducato Takes the Lead

Goes to show that almost half of these four-wheeled hotels rolling out on the road today are Fiat Ducatos (42.6%), clocking in at a whopping 427,590 vehicles. Hot on its tail is the Volkswagen Transporter with a 13.5% share (135,544 vehicles), while the Citroën Jumper takes third place with an impressive 8.6% share(85,785 vehicles). Interestingly, these statistics come from the Federal Motor Transport Authority.

Sixty and Still Adventuring

Here's a fun fact: nearly a third of these traveling homes belong to folks aged between 60 and 69, making it the biggest crew of owners with a total of 318,589 vehicles. Not far behind are those aged 50 to 59 with a whopping 265,073 motorhomes in their driveways. Or should I say, highways. The under-40 club, on the other hand, makes up less than ten percent with a cool 96,201 vehicles.

Where's the Party?

Wiesbaden is where it's at, with a whopping 33.7 motorhomes per 1,000 residents. Creis Schleswig-Flensburg is a close second, boasting around 28.7 vehicles per 1,000 residents. However, keep in mind that these numbers could have a bit of a twist due to the presence of large rental companies. Offenbach am Main brings up the rear with a disappointing 3.7 motorhomes per 1,000 residents. Over in Brandenburg, there are 25,649 registered vehicles, with 919 in Uckermark and 821 in Prignitz taking the lead. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has no plans to be left behind, with 17,044 motorhomes ready to hit the road. Here's a quick rundown of the numbers: Rostock-Stadt, 1,653; Schwerin-Stadt, 870; Mecklenburgische Seenplatte, 2,651; Rostock, 2,645; Vorpommern-Rügen, 2,707; Nordwestmecklenburg, 1,963; Vorpommern-Greifswald, 199; and Ludwigslust-Parchim, 2,557.

Diesel Rules the Road

97.4% of these road warriors are diesel-fueled, while 2.3% run on gasoline. Finally, 0.3% opt for gas, and the rest? A small yet growing group prefers alternative powertrains, with 160 electric (BEV) and 104 hybrid motorhomes on the move, including 38 plug-in hybrids.

  • The home-and-garden segment of these traveling four-wheeled homes suggests a trend towards comfortable living, with over 300,000 motorhomes belonging to people aged between 60 and 69.
  • Traveling lovers of lifestyle and adventure can explore beautiful destinations across Europe while enjoying the comfort of their motorhomes, with nearly a million registered vehicles, most of which are fueled by diesel.
