Cathedral blaze in historic Córdoba

The Córdoba Cathedral, also known as the Mezquita-Catedral, experienced a fire on the night of August 8, 2025. The blaze, which started in the Almánzor chapel, was caused by a short circuit in a floor cleaning machine.

The Mezquita-Catedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a reflection of Spain's cultural diversity and turbulent history. Originally built in the 8th century, it served as the main mosque of the Emirate of Córdoba. Over the centuries, it was expanded and reflected the wealth and power of the caliphate. In the 16th century, a Renaissance nave was built right in the middle of the Islamic prayer hall, creating a unique synthesis of Moorish and Christian architectural styles. After the Christian reconquest in 1236, it was converted into a Catholic cathedral.

The cathedral, which attracts visitors from all over the world, boasts endless rows of red and white horseshoe arches supported by over 850 columns. It is one of Spain's most significant buildings and, with approximately 23,000 square meters, is one of the largest former mosque buildings worldwide.

The fire was quickly controlled by firefighters after approximately one and a half hours, preventing major structural damage. The roof of the Almánzor chapel, covering about 25 square meters, collapsed from the combined fire and firefighting water impact. The neighboring Chapel of the Annunciation also suffered damage, including a smoke-blackened 19th-century altarpiece, scorched vaults, and a compromised column.

The extent of the damage to the cathedral is currently unknown, but it appears to be limited to the Almánzor chapel and adjacent areas. The rest of the monument was spared, and the cathedral remains open and safe for visitors. Restoration plans are underway, and heritage safety reforms are expected to strengthen protection of the monument in the future.

The information about the cause and extent of the fire was reported by the newspapers "Diario Córdoba" and "El País". The rapid and coordinated response by emergency services was praised by local authorities, preventing an "irreparable cultural loss" to this historic site.
