"Childhood Protection Movement in Media Sector: Initiative Underway"

The Children's Media Summit 2024, organised by the Children's Media Foundation, took place on February 28th, 2024. The summit aimed to find answers to the issues faced by the children's audience and the industry due to rapid changes in media consumption.

A major concern raised was the shift of older children and teenagers from linear channels to unregulated video-sharing platforms. This trend has implications for UK culture and society, as young people fail to find relevant and appropriate UK content on international platforms.

The reduced availability of public service and culturally relevant content for children and young people in the UK could have life-changing effects on their well-being and sense of self. This issue was highlighted by Nigel Pickard, Board Director of the Children's Media Foundation (CMF), who expressed concerns about a cultural crisis due to the shift of children and teenagers to unregulated platforms like YouTube and TikTok.

In response, the initiative "Responding to the Crisis of Childhood" was launched by the BBC at the summit. This initiative aimed to address the concerns and find solutions to ensure today's children's audience has access to culturally relevant, trusted, and life-affirming content.

The summit attracted a number of high-profile contributors, including Paul Lindley, OBE author of Raising the Nation, Patricia Hidalgo (Director of Children's and Education, BBC), Lucy Murphy (Director of Kid's Content, Sky UK and ROI), John McVay (CEO Pact), Kate O'Connor (Executive Chair Animation UK), and Magnus Brooke (ITV Group Director of Strategy, Policy, and Regulation).

The Children's Media Foundation is inviting the industry and children's advocates to support the campaign on their website. A campaign document titled "Responding to the Crisis of Childhood" was produced as a result of the summit, outlining the issues and proposed solutions to the crisis in children's media.

The loss of audience is impacting the children's media industry, causing commissioning to reduce in response to lost revenue. Little UK public service content features on these new platforms, exacerbating the problem. The Children's Media Foundation calls on policy makers to address these issues to ensure a brighter future for children's media in the UK.
