Controversial Stone Plant Approved Near UNESCO Patara Site
A controversial stone-crushing and screening plant is set to be built near the ancient city of Patara in Antalya Province, Turkey. Environmental groups have long fought to protect the area, home to a UNESCO World Heritage site and a vital habitat for endangered loggerhead sea turtles. Despite concerns, the project has received approval, with a total investment value of ₺424,800 (over $10,200).
The plant, planned to operate year-round, will run 16 hours a day for 25 days each month, raising fears of significant dust, noise, and heavy traffic. It has an annual capacity of 70,000 tons, which environmentalists argue poses a threat to the nearby UNESCO site and the critical nesting ground for loggerhead sea turtles.
The site, designated as 'Agricultural Land and Irrigation Area' under the regional Environmental Plan, was declared a Specially Protected Area in 1990 due to its unique ecosystem and historical importance. Environmental organizations like Doğa Derneği and local conservation groups have attempted to shield the region from such industrial projects for decades. The same company behind this project previously operated without an approved environmental impact report in 2021, leading to an administrative fine and halt in operations.
A new environmental impact assessment process has begun for the stone-crushing and screening plant. Despite the concerns and past controversies, the project moves forward, with environmental groups continuing their efforts to protect the fragile ecosystem and historical significance of the Patara region.
