Cycling Volunteers Journey Through Eastern Anatolia to Raise Funds for Science Lab
A group of seven volunteers, consisting of Turks and Americans, embarked on a journey from the Ani Ruins, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in northeastern Turkey. The current journey, led by the Bridge to Turkey Fund Foundation, is through eastern Anatolia and is the fourth stage of the latest initiative by the Cyclists Association, which has been running events for 11 years.
The President of the Bridge to Türkiye Fund Foundation, Bülent Ender, stated that they have cycled approximately 950 kilometers in 11 days. The team began their volunteer journey on September 7, starting in Kars, and have since traveled through Iğdır, Doğubayazıt in Ağrı, and the provincial center. They have cycled 90 kilometers (56 miles) from Ağrı and are heading towards Patnos.
The cycling team is then proceeding to Van city center and following the shores of Lake Van to conclude the event. They will then travel to Erciş in Van after Patnos. The final destination of the cycling journey is Tatvan, Bitlis.
The goal of the volunteers is to raise funds to build a science laboratory for students at Terzi Primary and Secondary School in Şanlıurfa, Turkey. Professor Ahmet Kaya, from Izmir, mentioned that the donations collected will be used to build a science lab at a school in Haliliye, Şanlıurfa. Bülent Ender also mentioned that they are delighted to make students happy through the donations raised.
The team has collaborated with the Aziz and Gwen Sancar Foundation and the Cyclists Association for this noble cause. Murat Suyabatmaz, president of the Cyclists Association, is overseeing the event.
People they meet along the way have welcomed them warmly, according to Professor Ahmet Kaya. The volunteers are covering dozens of kilometers each day and have received encouragement from Bülent Ender to get out of cars and ride bicycles.
Previous tours by the Cyclists Association include the Black Sea (2014), Aegean (2017), and Mediterranean (2021) regions. This cycling journey through eastern Anatolia is a testament to their commitment to promoting a healthy lifestyle and raising funds for a worthy cause.
