David Francis Holmes, a long-time resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico, passed away on June 29, 2025. Holmes was born on May 5, 1933, in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Douglasville, Pennsylvania.
Holmes spent most of his career working for the Air Force Weapons Lab at Kirtland Air Force Base. He began his military service during the Korean War, serving at Sandia Base in Albuquerque as part of the U.S. Army. After leaving the service, he attended the University of New Mexico (UNM) and earned a BS in Electrical Engineering in 1965.
Holmes retired in 1996. Throughout his retirement, he was an avid hiker and spent more than 65 years hiking the Sandia Mountains. He was a friendly presence to those he met on the trails, often sharing stories of his time spent in the military and at the Air Force Weapons Lab.
Holmes is survived by his wife Ruth Arlene Holmes, 5 children, 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild. He and his wife loved New Mexico and made Albuquerque their lifelong home.
