Tourists worldwide are avoiding booking trips to the United States following President Donald Trump's re-election, according to accommodation platform Trivago, as indicated by a notable decrease in U.S. bookings from certain countries.

Declinein Tourist Desire for US Vacations Identified by Trivago

In a telling sign that foreign vacationers are steering clear of the United States following President Donald Trump's re-election, travel booking platform Trivago has revealed a sharp drop in bookings from several countries. CEO Johannes Thomas noted a double-digit decline in bookings from Canada, Japan, Mexico, and even Germany.

The downturn in tourism from these nations has been linked to Trump's trade tariff policies, which impacted themfirst, with some analysts suggesting this has sparked a rebuke from travelers. Additionally, German travelers are shying away from the US, a decision Thomas attributes to the EU's potential 50% tariffs on EU goods, should they go into effect. For now, a review of the tariffs is scheduled for July 9th, following high-level talks between French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen.

Trivago's findings echo earlier data from the US National Travel and Tourism Office, which showed a 11.6% decline in international arrivals in March 2025, compared to March 2024.

Canadians have been particularly vocal in their disapproval, with some advocating for a boycott. However, the so-called "Travel and Tourism Trump Slump" isn't solely a show of disapproval. Unsettling border incidents, travel advisories from Europe and China, and economic uncertainties spawned by Trump's international policies have all contributed to the downturn.

Thomas emphasized that this decline is not exclusive to the US, with Americans also cutting their trip budgets and booking cheaper, less-rated accommodation due to economic concerns. He noted that the US market is more sensitive to economic instabilities, as Americans are often more connected to the stock market and carry higher debts compared to other nationalities.

This evidence suggests a meaningful impact of President Trump's re-election and subsequent policies on international tourism, particularly snubbing travel from Canada and Europe, and impacting regions within the US such as California, where international visits and spending are projected to decrease.

  1. Tourists from Canada, Japan, Mexico, and Germany are booking fewer accommodations in the United States, according to Trivago's recent findings.
  2. The decrease in bookings is linked to President Donald Trump's trade tariff policies, which have impacted these countries.
  3. Some analysts suggest that this decline is a rebuke from travelers, as they voice their disapproval of Trump's policies.
  4. German travelers are avoiding the US due to the potential 50% tariffs on EU goods, should they be implemented.
  5. The US market is more sensitive to economic instabilities, with Americans cutting their trip budgets and opting for cheaper, less-rated accommodations.
  6. The downturn in tourism from Canada and Europe, and economic concerns, are projected to impact regions such as California, where international visits and spending are projected to decrease.
