Dining at Mi Barrio, located within The George Pub, in Hitchin
In the heart of Hitchin, two establishments are offering an exciting blend of culture and cuisine. The George Pub is hosting a Street Art festival, while Mi Barrio Hitchin is serving up South American Tapas, both for one day.
At The George Pub, panels set up for the street art festival showcase the work of local and regional street artists. Some paintings were completed upon arrival, while others were still in progress, adding a lively atmosphere to the event. The pub, known for its family-friendly atmosphere and well-stocked bar, also caters to the younger crowd with a dedicated children's area for painting.
Across the street, Mi Barrio Hitchin has taken over the kitchen at The George Pub. The menu consists of a mix of small bites, meat bites, and vegetable bites, with no fish bites tried. The Tostones Rellenos, a fried plantain bowl filled with 10-hour, slow-roasted beef brisket, is a flavorful and messy treat. The Costillas de Maiz, corn ribs coated in butter and parmesan cheese, come with a smoky chipotle and sweet pineapple mayonnaise. The pork dish served by Mi Barrio Hitchin is tender and crispy, accompanied by a Colombian sour cream and a white cabbage and radish salad cured with lime. However, the yuca fries lacked flavor, and the coriander aioli served with them was not to the taste of the reviewer.
The server at Mi Barrio Hitchin considers the pork dish to be her favourite, while the staff at The George Pub were kind and seemed to have many regular customers. The festival takes place from midday until dinnertime, offering a perfect opportunity to enjoy both venues. The George Pub also offers a drink called "long drink," which is grapefruit-flavoured.
While specific names of the artists participating in the street art exhibition at The George Pub are not publicly listed, the event promises to showcase the best of local and regional talent. Whether you're a fan of art, food, or both, a visit to Hitchin on this special day is not to be missed.
