faced an Upheaval: The Impact of COVID-19 on Youth Hostels in Hesse, Germany 🇩🇪

Youth Accommodation Shifts Direction: A Look at Changing Youth Hostels - Embracing the New Era Instead of Pining for the Past

🔥 With the mercury zooming, the inclination to lace up hiking boots and explore new horizons peaks. And what better option for backpackers seeking affordable accommodations than Youth Hostels?

Recently, two of these gem-like escapes reopened in Hesse post modernization. Regrettably, several have succumbed to the relentless tide of against all odds - the COVID-19 pandemic. As per statistics from the state association of the German Youth Hostel Association (DJH), three youth hostels in Hesse met their demise due to the harsh pandemic reality.

compete fiercely to attract guests. The youth hostel in Wetzlar, for instance, has set its sights on businesses and families as clientele. In fact, 40 percent of the beds are now single or double beds as opposed to the sharing type that were once abundant.

Yet, these aren't your grandmother's hostels – far from it! The hostels welcome guests of all ages, including families, groups of pals, solo adventurers, and people of all abilities. Although every historical building may not cater to the physically challenged, some establishments like Wetzlar offer accessible rooms.

Pocket-friendly stays, still the appeal...Yet, the competition and affordability factor is palpable, acknowledged DJH board member Knut Stolle. Amidst the social uncertainties, people are tightening their purses and booking brief durations, he added. The recently revamped Burg Hessenstein hostel, however, experienced a surge in demand shortly after reopening, reported its manager, Hannah Wallner. Worth noting, the state association took guardianship after the previous trustee's bankruptcy.

The rural location at the heart of nature separates this youth hostel from its competitors, Wallner continued. The hostel's educational concept revolves around castle, environment, and nature. Other lodging options emphasize art, creativity, or science and aerospace, striving to keep up with current trends.

Sustainability in focus 💚The trend did not escape the inkling of the industry; it has been followed in the renovations. Material such as recycled flooring, modern heating systems, and attention to fair supply chains for furniture have been considered, emphasized Stolle. Now, there are solar energy systems installed in Wetzlar. "We have been utilizing green electricity in all our youth hostels for many years," Stolle stated, "Also, 50 percent of our vehicle fleet has been converted to electric vehicles."

Even though the hospitality sector is yet to recuperate fully post the pandemic, hostels face an uphill struggle winning customers with price sensitivity. Meanwhile, care must be taken not to sink economically, especially given potential increases in minimum wages. "We had a catch-up effect following school trips in the short term, but long-term, the conference business has yet to return to normal," Stolle cautioned.
