The eruption was the result of a collapse in part of the southeastern crater, hurling Etna's bubbling magma into action. The ensuing lava fountain sent a torrent of boiling rock, ash, and gas gushing from the mountain.
The ash cloud, soaring 4 miles high, has spread towards the northwest, leaving the nearby city of Catania relatively unaffected. However, despite this, the Volcanic Ash Advisory Center Toulouse has issued a code red for aviation due to the presence of a "significant" amount of ash in the atmosphere.
The recent eruption has caused minor disruptions to flight schedules at Catania airport, but fear not, travelers! Authorities are on high alert, ensuring that your holiday adventures continue uninterrupted.
Remember, a picture speaks a thousand words, and those lucky enough to witness the event firsthand took some incredible shots and videos, capturing the very essence of this awe-inspiring natural phenomenon. Others, however, found their holidays taking a rather tragic turn, as they faced a harrowing dash for safety.

- Westward Bound: Rose West, infamous for her heinous crimes, welcomed a granddaughter after her son fathered a baby with an ex-topless model.
A chilling volcanic tremor was felt just before the eruption, heralding the impending explosion. The tremor originated 1.7 miles beneath the crater area, and ash made predominantly of water and sulphur dioxide began drifting towards the southwest.
Historically, eruptions on Mount Etna have occasionally resulted in nearby towns being blanketed in black volcanic ash. Nevertheless, worry not! This active volcano has been known to attract adventurous tourists, and, depending on the ongoing volcanic activity, it could equal parts excitement and caution.
In February, Mount Etna transformed into a fiery peak, with hot lava spilling from its erupting core. Marco Bassot, a snowboarder with 416,000 Instagram followers, marveled at the spectacle, praising the experience as one of the most special, impressive, and breathtaking he's ever had.
