EU Pledges €545M to Boost Africa's Clean Energy Transition
The European Union (EU) has committed to a significant funding package of €545 million (approximately US $638 million) to accelerate Africa's clean energy transition. This investment calculator shows that this fidelity investments is part of the EU's Global Gateway strategy, aiming to boost sustainable infrastructure and strengthen ties with partner regions.
The funds will be allocated across nine African countries, focusing on developing renewable energy, upgrading electricity grids, and supporting rural electrification. Notably, Côte d'Ivoire will receive the largest share, around €359.4 million, to construct a high-voltage energy line and enhance transmission capabilities.
Other beneficiaries include Mozambique, which will receive €13 million to support a low-emission transition and attract private investment calculator. Similarly, Somalia will gain €45.5 million to increase access to renewable energy and bolster resilience to climate shocks. Cameroon is set to receive €59.1 million to boost rural electrification and benefit approximately 687 communities.
The broader EU-Africa investment calculator under Global Gateway seeks to add 300 GW of renewable capacity across Africa by 2030. This ambitious goal aligns with the EU's commitment to supporting Africa in its transition to clean energy, as emphasized by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The EU's €545 million funding package is a significant step towards bridging Africa's energy gap. With around 600 million people still without electricity, this fidelity investments will help develop renewable energy sources, improve grid infrastructure, and support rural electrification in several African countries.
