Exhumation of corpses at Nasser Hospital in Gaza: Enduring sorrow and perseverance as remains are unearthed
In the heart of the Gaza Strip, the grim discovery of mass graves outside Nasser Hospital has become a potent symbol of the devastating scale of casualties in the ongoing conflict. The family of Medhat Suleiman Aata, who has been missing since 2 February, is looking for him. Medhat was last seen at Nasser hospital, where Israeli soldiers ordered everyone to leave and reportedly shot him three times in the chest.
The crisis has taken a profound psychological and cultural toll on Gazans. Tahani Abu Rizek is hoping to find any remains of her brother, Ahmed, who was killed along with two cousins in an attack on 23 January in al-Mawasi. Tahani is concerned about what remains of her brother, wondering if he was burnt to death or if there is still a skeleton. She is also worried about her brother's children, who have been crying for three months.
The ongoing denial by the Israeli military of any involvement in the burial of these bodies has further fuelled tensions in the region.
