Experience the Rapids of Pacuare River, Class IV, in Turrialba

Turrialba, a picturesque town nestled in Costa Rica, is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and rapids-filled rivers. The National Geographic Magazine hailed Costa Rica's Rio Pacuare as one of the top 5 best whitewater rafting spots worldwide, and who am I to argue? Let's dive right into it!

My mate Abby and I are die-hard river enthusiasts, so we hopped on a local bus and headed into this Costa Rican playground for a few unforgettable days.

Tico's River Ride

Big tour companies abound in Turrialba, churning through eager travelers like a well-oiled machine. But I'm no fan of corporate adrenaline-pumping mechanisms. That's why I stumbled upon Tico's River Adventures, a small, friendly, family-run operation owned by the spirited Roberto.

He picked us up outside our hostel, Spanish By The River, and we met the rest of our rowdy rafting crew at his home.

Riding the Pacuare River

We embarked on a scenic road-trip through Costa Rica's green heartland before meeting our vessels along the mighty Pacuare. Donning lifejackets, helmets, and paddles, our seasoned guide Jeovany briefed us on safety.

Before plunging into the hair-raising class IV rapids, we practiced rescuing each other from the river. It's harder than it looks to get back in, even with a helping hand!

Hold On Tight!

The adrenaline-infused roller coaster began as we hurtled through 11 different class III and IV sections. With twists like Doble Piso, Rodeo, Pele el Ojo, Dos Montañas, Roca Magentica, and Graduacion, every bend brought another pulse-pounding adventure.

Suddenly, we were slammed against a boulder, a reminder of the river's raw power, but our rescue practice saved us from a calamitous outcome.

River's Beauty

Moments later, with our hearts (and our bodies) still racing, we found ourselves surrounded by the river's stunning scenery–thick jungle, steep canyon waterfalls, and vibrant Blue Morpho butterflies fluttering past.

Then, it was time to take a dip! We stopped for lunch on the riverbank, followed by a refreshing swim in a narrow canyon section. Our guide pointed out a group of local Chirripo indigenous kids using a cable to cross the river overhead in a metal basket.

Finally, we reached the end of our 18-mile, day-long rafting adventure, ordering well-deserved beers at a riverside bar while watching more local kids play by the water's edge.

I've rafted before, but my experience on the Pacuare cemented my conviction that National Geographic got it spot-on. Grab your paddle and join us on this unforgettable ride down the rapids!
