Explore Scotland's less frequented treasures: Tour the Inner Forth Circle
Cycling Round the Inner Forth in Scotland offers a unique and rewarding experience for cyclists of all abilities. This new initiative encourages exploration of the area's rich history, stunning landscapes, and diverse wildlife, all while promoting a healthy and environmentally friendly mode of transport.
The two-day tour, following National Cycle Network Route 76, is a 70-mile circular trail. Day One is a 31-mile journey from Inverkeithing to Stirling, passing under historic landmarks like Dundas Castle and Blackness Castle while enjoying scenic views of the Forth Bridges. Day Two, a 39.3-mile journey, explores the industrial landscape along the south shore of the Inner Forth Estuary, starting at the iconic Kelpies and ending with a visit to the Falkirk Wheel.
For those with less time, six shorter day trips with detailed itineraries and maps have been created. The Falkirk Wheel from the Kelpies, an introductory level route, is a 10-mile journey taking between two and two and a half hours. The Linlithgow, Bo'ness & Blackness Loop, an intermediate level route, is 15 miles long and takes between two and three hours. One of the shorter day trips, Historic Alloa to the Ochil Fault, is an introductory level trip of 14.4 to 19.6 miles.
The routes allow you to explore the beauty and history of the Inner Forth Estuary. Keep your eyes peeled for the new Round the Inner Forth logo and signs located along the route. The Dunfermline to Culross Loop, an intermediate level route, is a 21.3-mile journey, while the Beneath the Three Bridges route, also intermediate, is an 17.4-mile route taking between two and three hours.
The routes encompass stunning views around the Firth of Forth, including waterfronts, estuaries, and historic towns, which provide a picturesque cycling environment. Cyclists can appreciate diverse Scottish flora and fauna typical of coastal and inland environments along the route. Passing through towns and villages offers opportunities to explore Scottish heritage and local culture.
The cycle route provides a healthful aerobic workout with varied terrain that can be adapted for different fitness levels. Riding the Inner Forth presents a satisfying challenge, combining coastal riding with inland segments, suitable for both leisure cyclists and more experienced riders.
