Exploring the Stunning Isles of the Stockholm Archipelago: A Must-Visit Destination

The Stockholm archipelago, a breathtaking collection of over 24,000 granite islets spanning 80 kilometers, offers a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Here's a rundown of some of the top islands to visit, each with its own unique charm and experiences.

Möja

Located in the easternmost part of the archipelago, Möja is a paradise for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. With scenic harbors, former fishing villages, and marine reserves, it's an ideal destination for kayaking. Reachable by ferry, either direct or with a change in Boda, the journey takes approximately 5 hours from Stockholm.

Runmarö

Known as the authors’ island, Runmarö is a haven of natural beauty. Abundant with orchid species and lakes, it's a source of inspiration for artists. A short 10-minute boat ride from Stavsnäs, which is about a 50-minute drive from Stockholm city center or accessible by bus from Slussen, Runmarö is a must-visit.

Fjäderholmarna and Tegelön

These popular islands, located close to Stockholm, offer charming nature and local culture. They are often featured in archipelago tours and activities such as kayaking. Quick and easy access makes them perfect for a day trip.

Vaxholm

The capital of the archipelago, Vaxholm, is reachable within about 30 minutes from Stockholm. It offers a historic fortress, quaint streets, and a traditional Swedish atmosphere. Kayak tours often start here or include a stop.

Other notable islands include:

  • Björkö, famous for the archaeological site of Birka, an ancient trading city founded in the 8th century, and offers reconstructions of houses and museum exhibitions. Accessible by boat from Strömkajen in 2.25 hours, Björkö is known for its Viking history and offers trails leading to fortifications and tumuli.
  • Uto, the largest inhabited island in the archipelago and the sunniest (the southernmost), is one of the best-preserved. It can be accessed by boat from Nybroviken in 2.5 hours and offers beautiful walks on foot, by kayak, or bicycle, between crystal-clear waters, rocky plateaus, and a stunning view of the Baltic Sea.
  • Grinda, cherished by Stockholm residents for its sandy beaches and rocky coves, is the location of the first seaside resort in the archipelago. Accessible by boat from Strandvägen, Grinda is 50 km northeast of Stockholm.
  • Rögrund, a former military post, is a favorite hideaway for Stockholmers. Located 50 km south of Stockholm and accessible by boat from Strömkajen (summer) in 2.5 hours, Rögrund offers a small marina, a summer café, quiet bathing areas, pedestrian trails, and a viewpoint offering a clear view of the surrounding islands.
  • Ingmarsö, populated by a small thousand permanent residents, offers trails through birch forests and open meadows, as well as a small museum and a restored windmill. Year-round inhabited, Ingmarsö can be accessed by boat from Strandvägen in 2 hours.

The Stockholm archipelago is mainly explored by boat, with regular ferries of the Waxholmsbolaget company and fast summer shuttles departing from several quays in Stockholm. Only 150 islands in the archipelago are inhabited year-round, with around a thousand more welcoming visitors during the summer months.

One such year-round inhabited island is Värmdö, beloved by the Swedes for its porcelain factory and cultural complex dedicated to ceramics. Värmdö is located 25 km east of Stockholm and is accessible by bus from Slussen.

Another standout island is Utö, the largest and most southerly island in the archipelago, known for its untamed beauty, with rocky landscapes, dense forests, and sandy beaches.

Lastly, Vaxholm, the "capital" of Stockholm's archipelago, is a picture-perfect island with wooden cottages, cobblestone streets, and a fortress-museum. It's located 25 km northeast of Stockholm and is accessible by boat in 1 hour from Strandvägen.

Whether you're seeking a long excursion or a quick day trip, Stockholm's archipelago offers a wealth of options to immerse yourself in its rich history, culture, and natural beauty.
