Gathering of Local Organizations United for Enhanced HIV Education and Understanding

On Saturday, Nov. 21, from 4 to 8 p.m., the Rochester community will come together for an engaging event titled "Hope Takes Action: A Road to Victory for Rochester". This event, organised by the MOCHA Center and Rochester Victory Alliance, aims to foster awareness about HIV/AIDS and vaccine research through community engagement and education.

The evening promises a mix of live performances, music, and activities that foster community connection and celebration. While specific artists or program details for this event may not be available, attendees can expect a blend of musical acts or DJs, speakers from the health and advocacy communities, interactive sessions about HIV/AIDS prevention and vaccine research, community resource booths, and networking opportunities.

The event will take place at Cathedral Hall, located on the fourth floor of the Rochester Auditorium Theatre building, 875 E. Main St. Admission is free, but capacity is limited and will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

A highlight of the event will be a slideshow of AIDS posters from around the world, collected by retired University of Rochester physician Edward Atwater, M.D. The entertainment lineup will feature a variety of acts, including skits, theatrical entertainment, comedy, dance, and music.

Among the entertainers for the event are JB Brown, DJ Papito, Big Time & Nathaniel, FuturPointe, Imagen, a jazz ensemble from the Eastman School of Music, Miss Sweet Potato Pie, The MOCHA All-Stars, and Szet.

The event is not only a platform for education on critical health issues but also a means to mobilise the Rochester community around the shared goal of ending HIV/AIDS and supporting vaccine research.

According to Michael Keefer, M.D., professor of Medicine and principal investigator of the Rochester Victory Alliance, the recent preliminary results of a large study in Thailand indicating an experimental vaccine reduced the risk of infection by 31 percent underscore the importance of such community events.

Stephaun C. Clipper, prevention programs manager of MOCHA, emphasised that ending the spread of HIV requires collaboration and compassion from community-based organisations, health service providers, and the community.

In addition to the MOCHA Center and Rochester Victory Alliance, other groups sponsoring the event include Roc City Chronicles, Voices of Goodwill Baptist Church, the Seattle-based HIV Vaccine Trials Network Legacy Project, Action for a Better Community, AIDS Community Health Center, AIDS Rochester, Al Sigl Center, the Bachelor Forum, Black Leadership Commission on AIDS-Rochester Affiliate, Black Men Latino Men Health Crisis, Developmental Center for AIDS Research at the University of Rochester, Empire State College, Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley, Huther-Doyle, McCree McCuller Wellness Center, New York State Department of Health Western Region HIV Program, Rochester Area Task Force on AIDS, Tawa Pano Unity Fellowship Church, and VisitRochester.

The event is also supported by RAPA (Rochester Association for the Performing Arts). Parking behind the building is free, and the theatre is accessible via the 8/8X bus route.

Food will be provided by Fresh Wise, donated by Wegmans. The event is a testament to the power of community action in the fight against HIV/AIDS and the pursuit of a vaccine.
