Deutsche Bahn Reverses Flexprice Ticket Cancellation Policy
Deutsche Bahn (DB) has announced changes to its Flexprice ticket cancellation conditions effective from the timetable change in December 2024. This decision comes in response to customer feedback and criticism from passenger organizations such as Pro Bahn.
Initially, a fee of ten euros was to be charged for the return of a Flexprice ticket more than eight days before the journey. However, the fee will no longer apply following the reversal.
A welcome development for customers will be the introduction of discounts for Flexprice tickets purchased up to 28 days before departure. The savings could amount to 20% compared to booking on the day of departure.
Effective from mid-June, tickets for short-distance journeys of around 100 kilometers will start at 6.99 euros. With a Bahncard, the price drops to 5.24 euros for short trips, according to DB’s announcement. Further discounts and offers are planned for young travelers under 27, seniors, and commuters in long-distance traffic.
Owners of a Bahncard 50 can take a companion with them at the same conditions until September 30. Both travelers will then receive 50% off all Flexprices and 25% off Sparprices. This could save around 120 euros on a trip from Frankfurt am Main to Munich, estimated DB.
As the holiday season approaches, DB anticipates well-attended trains for Ascension Day on May 29, with bookings nine percent higher than last year. Pentecost bookings show a four percent increase, according to the company's records. Despite this encouraging response, busy routes like Frankfurt to Munich and Hamburg to Berlin are expected to see a significant number of travelers.
In terms of Flexpreis ticket history, there have been several adaptations and introductions of flexible fares such as Flexpreis Plus, which allows travel on different days. However, specific changes or updates to the cancellation policy may require consulting DB's official website or customer service for accurate and up-to-date information.
