Greens Reject CDU's Weaker Climate Goals, Push for 'Competitive Climate Economy'
The Greens have firmly rejected a demand by CDU politician Tilman Kuban to weaken Germany's climate goals. Kuban, supported by Saxony's Minister-President Michael Kretschmer, proposed reducing CO2 emissions by 80% by 2045 instead of achieving climate neutrality. The Greens, however, insist on a 'competitive climate economy with secure jobs', requiring clear climate goals and active support for companies and consumers.
Julia Verlinden, deputy chair of the Green parliamentary group, criticized Kuban's proposal as irresponsible and harmful to the German economy. She argued that climate protection is an opportunity for Germany's location and that future technologies are already generating revenue. The Greens aim to create a 'competitive climate economy with secure jobs', which requires clarity on climate goals and active support for businesses and consumers.
The Federal Constitutional Court derived a duty to achieve climate neutrality from Article 20a of the Basic Law in its 2021 climate ruling. This duty is further reinforced by Germany's CO2 budget, oriented towards the Paris climate agreement, which should not be exceeded after 2045. Drastic CO2 savings before 2045 are necessary to allow for any remaining emissions after that year.
The Greens' rejection of Kuban's demand underscores their commitment to ambitious climate goals. With the Federal Constitutional Court's ruling and the CO2 budget in mind, the Greens aim to create a competitive climate economy that supports jobs and the German economy while protecting the environment.
