Historic Vote Looms for Philadelphia's Iconic Hospitality Center
Philadelphia's Historical Commission is set to vote on Oct. 10 on a nomination to protect the vacant Philadelphia Hospitality Center, a circular building along John F. Kennedy Boulevard, as a local landmark. The Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia wants to safeguard the 1959 structure, which has been vacant for about a decade and is part of a broader redesign of LOVE Park.
The building, constructed during Philadelphia's post-war modernization efforts, is considered one of the city's most iconic and recognizable modern buildings of the International Style. Originally serving as the city's primary tourist information center, it attracted visitors with its floor-to-ceiling windows. The city's Department of Parks and Recreation plans to issue a new Request for Proposal for the building this fall, aiming to select a tenant by the holiday season and reopen it in early 2026 for various events. Meanwhile, the historical status of the Philadelphia Hospitality Center remains undecided, pending the final vote.
The Philadelphia Hospitality Center, a symbol of the city's post-war modernization, could soon gain historic protection. The Historical Commission's upcoming vote will determine the building's future, potentially preserving it for generations to come.
