Imperial Family of Japan to Travel to Nagasaki in September
In September, Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako, and Princess Aiko will embark on a poignant journey to Nagasaki Prefecture. This visit marks the first time all three members of the Imperial family are visiting Nagasaki together, and it will also be their first trip to Nagasaki since Emperor Naruhito's enthronement in 2019.
The primary focus of the visit is to pay respects to the victims of the 1945 U.S. atomic bombing in Nagasaki. On September 12, the Imperial family will attend a memorial ceremony, laying flowers at a memorial monument for the victims of the Aug. 9, 1945, atomic bombing.
Empress Masako will meet with hibakusha, atomic bomb survivors, at a nursing home in Nagasaki on September 13. This will be a significant part of their visit, as the Imperial family's agenda is centred around connecting with survivors.
Princess Aiko will join her parents for two days, from September 12 to 13. This will be her first trip to Nagasaki Prefecture.
The Imperial family's visit to Nagasaki includes a memorial ceremony and a meeting with atomic bomb survivors, both scheduled for different days. This visit is a continuation of the Imperial family's long-standing tradition of honouring the victims of the atomic bombings and showing support for the survivors.
Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako last visited Nagasaki Prefecture in 1996, when Empress Masako accompanied the then Crown Prince Naruhito to offer flowers at the atomic bomb memorial site. Emperor Naruhito himself last laid flowers there in 2009 as Crown Prince. The Imperial couple's next scheduled visit to Nagasaki is from September 12 to 14, 2025, marking their first visit to the prefecture since Emperor Naruhito's enthronement.
It is worth noting that there were no available reports indicating visits by Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako to Nagasaki Prefecture in 2021. The upcoming visit noted is in 2025.
This visit to Nagasaki is a testament to the Imperial family's commitment to remembering the past and fostering understanding and empathy for those affected by historical events.
