Kazakhstan is actively promoting its rich culinary heritage as part of its broader tourism strategy to attract Chinese tourists. This strategy is highlighted by visits from Chinese media teams exploring traditional Kazakh food and culture.

The latest visit, from a team from Sanlian Lifeweek Magazine, is for an upcoming feature in the magazine. The team is currently visiting Astana, Almaty, and Shymkent, experiencing the hospitality of the Kazakh people and exploring traditional dishes like beshbarmak, kumys, and milk tea with millet.

The trip seeks to promote Kazakh cuisine and attract Chinese tourists interested in gastronomic tourism, a growing trend in China. Journalist Liwei Wu stated that Kazakhstan's culinary traditions are unique and they were eager to learn more. The team visited national restaurants and bustling markets during their tour, immersing themselves in the flavours and aromas of Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan's efforts to revive and promote its national cuisine internationally are being highlighted. In 2024, the number of visitors from China to Kazakhstan increased by 78 percent, reaching 655,000. This growth is partly due to Kazakhstan's status as a visa-free destination and its cultural ties with China.

The visit was inspired by Kazakhstan's recent recognition as the Most Perspective New Destination 2025 by Tongcheng Travel, one of China's leading online travel agencies. Kazakhstan's culinary heritage is being showcased in culturally rich settings, such as Turkestan, known for its historical significance and culinary experiences like lamb plov and kumis.

Kairat Sadvakassov, the chairman of Kazakh Tourism, stated that gastronomy tourism is one of the most promising sectors for attracting global travelers. By engaging Chinese media teams in visits that document and broadcast these experiences, Kazakhstan aims to boost visibility in China’s growing outbound tourism sector. This multidimensional approach leverages Kazakhstan’s culinary heritage as a compelling facet of its tourism product for the Chinese market.

The Kazakh Tourism Press Service reported on the visit on Jan 16. As Kazakhstan continues to promote its culinary heritage, it is poised to attract more Chinese tourists seeking authentic cultural experiences.
