Local village in Romania to establish museum showcasing a collection of traditional whistles from both the region and around the globe.

The small village of Săliștea, Romania, is about to become home to an extraordinary cultural project: the Museum of the World's Whistles. This innovative museum, launched by ISVOR, a cultural association, aims to bring together traditional whistles from various cultures and regions, creating a global dialogue through these simple yet significant instruments.

The Museum of the World's Whistles is not just a physical space; it's a comprehensive cultural initiative that includes a digital archive, online platform, podcast, and blog. These resources will provide broader access and keep the project evolving, ensuring that its reach extends beyond the village walls.

The museum's collection includes over 30 instruments gathered by Oana Ivașcu, the president and founding member of ISVOR, over 24 years, as well as community-sourced whistles. The project has attracted several important partners, including cultural institutions in Romania and abroad.

One of the key aspects of the museum is its focus on preserving and showcasing traditional whistles from Romania and around the world. To achieve this, oral histories and video portraits of whistle makers and local craftsmen are being collected for the museum. These first-hand accounts will provide valuable insights into the cultural significance of whistles in various societies.

Visitors to the museum will be able to interact with exhibits through video screens, 360° images, sound archives, and QR codes. To further enhance the educational aspect of the museum, a whistle method guide with sheet music, illustrations, and audio samples will be developed. This resource, targeting children but accessible to all, will help visitors understand the intricacies of whistle-making and playing.

ISVOR is planning crowdfunding campaigns to support the museum, including the purchase of a minibus for transporting artists and children to events. The grand opening of the museum is scheduled for December this year, featuring school workshops, a multimedia exhibition, and a concert by the Imago Mundi ensemble.

The Museum of the World's Whistles is an extension of ISVOR's previous cultural projects in Vâlcea villages, focusing on creative education and cultural access in schools. The museum will be located in the former village school of Săliștea, a fitting location for this educational and cultural hub.

The project has received support from Mayor Gheorghe Dinculescu for its establishment in the Old School of Săliștea, Mălaia. The "Atlas of the World's Whistles" will trace the history and global diversity of these instruments, providing a comprehensive overview of this unique cultural phenomenon.

For those interested in contributing to the museum, ISVOR has launched an open call for people to donate traditional whistles to the museum, which will be curated and featured in an interactive map and video series.
