Malaysia's New SFO Scheme Draws Wealthy Families, Targets RM2 Billion AUM
Malaysia has bolstered its appeal to wealthy families and international investors with a new Single Family Office (SFO) incentive scheme. The Ministry of Finance gazetted the scheme on 3 October 2025, formalising the country's commitment to this sector.
The scheme, launched in September 2024, has already drawn significant interest. Over 30 expressions of interest have been submitted, with six families receiving conditional approval. These families have close to RM400 million in assets under management (AUM). The target is to reach RM2 billion by the end of 2026.
To facilitate this growth, a one-stop centre has been established to streamline services. The centre aims to make Malaysia an attractive destination for wealthy families and international investors. The scheme offers a 20-year incentive horizon, including exemptions on various income types and a two-step compliance process.
To qualify, single family offices must operate from the Forest City Special Financial Zone, employ local staff, and invest in Malaysia's capital markets. The scheme also includes a dedicated visa track for families and investment professionals.
Investments in promoted sectors qualify for a 1.5x AUM multiplier. The Securities Commission (SC) will expand its Family Office Summit and publish a detailed guide to help families navigate the regulatory framework.
The Malaysian government's efforts to attract wealthy families and international investors are showing promising results. With over 30 expressions of interest and six families already approved, the SFO incentive scheme is poised to bring significant AUM to the country. The streamlined services, attractive incentives, and dedicated support make Malaysia an appealing destination for family offices.
