Division in Bavaria Over the 15th of August Holiday
The 15th of August is a holiday in municipalities with a higher Catholic population in Bavaria, creating a divide within the region. This holiday, which marks the Feast of the Assumption, is deeply rooted in Catholic tradition and marks the belief in Mary's "ascent to heaven."
This divide aligns with the broader religious landscape in Bavaria, where Catholicism and Protestantism coexist but have distinct traditions and holidays recognized by local governments based on their community's religious demographics. In Bavaria, 1,708 cities and municipalities have a holiday on the 15th of August, while 348 do not.
This year, two municipalities have lost their holiday on the 15th of August. Seßlach near Coburg is one such municipality, a decision that has been met with regret by its local businesses and the manager of a company in Seßlach, Manuela Mueller. Seßlach had been the only municipality with a holiday in the Coburg district, causing past problems.
On the other hand, Marktrodach near Kronach is now a holiday on the 15th of August. Mayor Norbert Graebner of Marktrodach is pleased about the new holiday, although he is not mentioned in this paragraph. Six communities in Bavaria have gained a holiday on the 15th of August this year due to the latest population numbers from the 2022 census.
The issue of the 15th of August holiday has now reached politics in Bavaria. The SPD wants to introduce a bill to give all Bavarians the day off on the 15th of August. However, the Bavarian Economy Association (vbw) opposes the idea of additional holidays, citing potential negative impacts on businesses.
Interestingly, in municipalities with a higher evangelical population, the 15th of August is a regular workday. Many municipalities in Franconia do not have a holiday, such as Nuremberg, Bayreuth, and Coburg.
It's worth noting that the Assumption of Mary dates back to the 5th century and is not based on biblical evidence. Pope Pius XII declared the Assumption of Mary a dogma in 1950, making it a binding belief for Catholics. The German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) also wants a holiday for the whole of Bavaria, adding another voice to the ongoing debate.
As the debate continues, it's clear that the 15th of August holiday is a contentious issue in Bavaria, dividing the region along religious lines. The future of this holiday remains uncertain, with potential changes on the horizon.
