Most travelers to Greece hail predominantly from Germany
Greece, with its sun-drenched stretches of sand, azure seas, and rich cultural heritage, remains a coveted destination for German vacationers. Indeed, Germany serves as the leading and most vital source of tourists for the country, even surpassing the British in popularity.
Last year saw a record-breaking 36 million tourists visiting Greece, a figure that continues to grow. German tourists accounted for a significant portion of this record-breaking number, with a staggering 5.7 million choosing to vacation in Hellas – an increase of almost 13% when compared to 2023. This upward trend is anticipated to persist in 2024, according to the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE), based on research conducted and analyzed by its research institute, INSETE.
The UK claims the runner-up spot with 4.7 million guests, while Bulgaria follows closely behind in third place with approximately 3 million visitors. Notably, the northern Aegean Sea has experienced a surge in popularity among tourists, according to INSETE's data, with a 40% increase in visitors to the region, which encompasses islands such as Lesbos, Chios, and Samos.
In total, tourists accounted for around 230 million overnight stays and a turnover of over 20 billion euros. The average stay lasted six nights, and the average spend per person came to around 523 euros.
While the costs for German tourists visiting Greece can vary considerably, Crete is one of the priciest destinations, with an average cost of 770 euros per visit. Conversely, the Epirus region in the northwest offers significantly lower expenses for travelers at just 192 euros.
Greece's tourism sector is a crucial pillar of its economy, making up nearly 30% of the country's GDP, as estimated by experts. This sector plays a critical role in Greece's overall economic recovery, especially following the pandemic and earlier financial crises.
Greece's appeal to German holidaymakers is multifaceted, with its vibrant cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and Mediterranean climate being major draws. The strong relationship between Greece and Germany, which has rebounded from strained ties during the Greek financial crisis, further enhances its allure. Its strategic location, offering a mix of relaxation and cultural experiences across numerous islands and historical sites like Athens and Delphi, adds to its appeal as a travel destination.
- The Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE) has forecasted an expected increase in the number of German tourists visiting Greece in 2024, as the country's finance sector continues to benefit from this growing sector, which constitutes nearly 30% of Greece's GDP.
- As more German vacationers flock to Greece each year, the Community and Employment policies would need to cater to the increasing demand for employment in the tourism industry, while maintaining a balance between affordability and high-quality lifestyle for both locals and tourists, particularly in popular destinations like Crete and Epirus.
