New Arrival: FreeCard 2.0 Released
In an effort to help children and young people in Germany cope with the lingering effects of the pandemic, the FreeCard 2.0 will be introduced in 2024. This initiative, managed by the Federal Ministry for Family, Senior Citizens, Women, and Youth, aims to provide prepaid credit for leisure activities, enabling youth to participate in cultural, sporting, and other events, regardless of their parents' financial situation.
The psychological and social burdens caused by the pandemic have led to an increase in emotional disorders and mental illnesses that are likely to persist for a long time. Seven out of ten children and young people in Germany still feel psychologically stressed by the consequences of the pandemic in the third year after the outbreak. The FreeCard, initially introduced in spring 2022 to make up for the cancellation of leisure activities due to COVID-19, will provide 60 euros of credit per year for leisure facilities.
The new FreeCard 2.0 will be sent automatically to all children and young people up to the age of 18 in time for the summer holidays in 2024. The annual credit for the FreeCard 2.0 remains at 60 euros. It is important to note that the credit on the current FreeCard 1.0 can still be used until December 31, 2023.
The FreeCard 2.0 addresses the issue of prolonged psychological and social burdens caused by the pandemic and aims to help children and young people, regardless of their financial situation, out of social isolation. Closed sports halls, theaters, and playgrounds are no longer a concern, but the exclusion from social life during the pandemic still has an impact.
Mayor Bovenschulte comments that the FreeCard 1.0 was a success and it was clear that the FreeCard should be available in the coming two years. The Senate is providing around 18.7 million euros for the FreeCard program. A Europe-wide tender must be held for the new project and its specific implementation and production of the cards.
