Reasons for vacation termination clarified
Let's shed light on trip cancellations and break down the nitty-gritty details you need to know about your trip cancellation benefit with our platform. In this post, we'll dive into the fine print to help you understand what's protected under our policies.
What are covered reasons?
Covered reasons are specific, unfortunate events that make you eligible to submit a claim and receive reimbursement for approved claims.
With our platform, trip cancellation coverage is built into most plans purchased more than 48 hours before your departure date. This means you're covered for up to 100% of unused, prepaid, and non-refundable trip costs, including flights, hotel bookings, tickets, and activities. To ensure your claim reflects your trip expenses accurately, make sure the trip cost you provide us reflects the total of non-refundable expenses for your trip. If you have any questions, our 24/7 support team is always here to help, and you can adjust the trip cost before your departure if needed.
Covered reasons for trip cancellation on our platform
Let's dive into the specifics of what our platform's trip cancellation coverage protects:
Health-related issues
- Death of you, a traveling companion, a family member, or a business partner before your departure date.
- Sickness or injury of you, a family member, or a traveling companion, which requires a visit to a physician before cancellation. In cases where it's not possible to see a physician before cancellation, the illness or injury must be certified by a physician as resulting in medical restrictions disabling you from traveling.
- Sickness or injury of your business partner that is disabling enough to prevent you from managing your business while you're away.
- Complications of pregnancy occurring after the effective date of coverage.
- Inability of your host at your scheduled destination to provide accommodations due to illness or death.
- Quarantine due to health-related issues.
Natural disasters and transportation incidents
- Involvement in a traffic accident en route to the departure city of your trip, confirmed by a police report.
- Airports or air traffic control systems being shut down by local authorities for at least 6 consecutive hours, resulting in the cessation of services (excluding terrorism or acts of war).
- Mandatory evacuations ordered by local authorities at your scheduled destination, which prevent you from traveling or arriving at your destination.
- Your home or destination being made uninhabitable by a natural disaster or burglary during your trip.
Crime and financial defaults
- Theft of your passports or visas specifically required for your trip, verified by a police report.
- Felonious assault within 10 days before the scheduled departure date.
- Financial insolvency or default of an entity providing travel arrangements that causes a complete cessation of travel services, provided the financial insolvency or default occurs more than 14 days after the effective date of your trip cancellation benefit. Benefits will be paid in cases of financial insolvency or default for an airline only if no alternate transportation is available.
Work and service obligations
- Subpoenas, court orders, jury duty, or witness requirements, with the exception of cases where you're a party to the legal action (excluding cases where you must appear in a law enforcement capacity).
- Call to active military duty or aid in the event of a natural disaster.
- Revoked or reassigned military leave.
- Involuntary termination or layoff from your job, provided the termination notice occurs at least one day after the effective date of your trip cancellation coverage. This excludes temporary or seasonal employment, independent contractors, freelancers, or self-employed individuals.
Terrorism and travel alerts
- Hijacking.
- Terrorist incidents by recognized terror organizations within 30 days of your scheduled departure date in a city on your itinerary (unless your travel supplier offers a substitute itinerary).
- Travel alerts or warnings for levels 4 and higher issued for cities on your itinerary after your effective date for trip cancellation, made specifically for the destination on your itinerary. The travel alert or warning must occur within 30 days of the scheduled departure date.
When to cancel your trip
Don't forget to report trip cancellations to suppliers like airlines within 72 hours of the event causing the need for cancellation. If the event delays the reporting of the cancellation beyond 72 hours, report the event as soon as possible. Our platform does not cover increased amounts of unused, non-refundable payments or deposits due to delays or reporting beyond 72 hours.
Covered reasons vs. foreseeable events
Our platform, like most travel insurance providers, does not cover expected or foreseeable events or problems. If you're purchasing travel protection and you think you might need to cancel for a specific reason, that reason is probably a foreseeable event. In such cases, it's best to plan your trip when there isn't a high likelihood of canceling.
A common example of foreseeable events is a level 4 travel alert. If you're planning a vacation and your destination lands on the level 4: do not travel list from the U.S. State Department and you buy travel protection after it's on the list, you won't be covered. However, if you insure your trip before your destination is placed on the list, it would be a covered scenario as it is not foreseeable yet.
