Hamburg Airport Introduces New Interactive Play Areas for Children

Hamburg Airport is making travel more enjoyable for young passengers with the introduction of new interactive play areas for children. These play spaces, designed for children aged 2 to 9, are part of the airport's HAM Upgrade modernization program and are located in various terminals.

The play areas, described as quaint, tidy, and welcoming, provide a safe and entertaining space for children to play and unwind during their time at the airport. One such location can be found in Terminal 2, where the environment is designed to be both safe and fun for children.

The play areas focus on age-appropriate entertainment and comfort, ensuring that children have a dedicated area to enjoy while waiting for flights. While specific details about the interactive elements are not yet fully disclosed, the emphasis is on creating a pleasant and secure atmosphere for families passing through the airport terminals.

In addition to the play areas, Hamburg Airport is also investing in other improvements. Approximately twelve million euros will be spent on modernizing the restrooms, with half of the public facilities set to be updated by the end of 2025. The modernization aims to provide a comfortable and convenient experience for passengers, with features such as high-quality materials, efficient design, and improved accessibility.

By the end of 2025, seating areas will be equipped with new furniture, with further areas, including the food court and the relaxation area "Upper Deck", to follow in 2026. The HAM Upgrade modernization program also includes innovative solutions such as the Slot & Fly reservation system and new Smart Gates.

For those seeking more extensive play experiences outside the airport, Hamburg offers attractions such as Hansa-Park, which caters well to young children with playgrounds, rides, and water features.

The newly opened play areas have been well received by the youngest travelers, just in time for the start of the summer holidays 2025. Erik Hohberger, Head of Construction Projects at Hamburg Airport, stated that the goal was to create play areas that invite children to play, try out, and discover together.

Other unique play areas at the airport include the Wind concept, inspired by airplanes, with its own tower, windmills for color effects, and a flight simulator with gesture control for older children. The Ocean play area, inspired by container ships, offers a climbing experience made of stylized container boxes, supplemented by a telescope. The Flora concept offers climbing fun in the trees for children aged 2 to 12.

The HAM Upgrade modernization program plans to renovate 20 public restroom facilities by 2031, with a strong emphasis on high hygiene standards, minimal contact usage, and ample space for passengers and their carry-on luggage. Additionally, approximately twenty million euros will be invested in the comprehensive renovation and modernization of the terminals by 2027 for an even more enjoyable travel experience from Hamburg.

A new smoking lounge will be opened in the Skywalk by autumn 2025, replacing the previous smoking cabins. The new lounge will offer a comfortable waiting area with apron views and lounge furniture, providing a more pleasant smoking experience for passengers.

In conclusion, Hamburg Airport is committed to enhancing the overall passenger experience, especially for families with young children. The new play areas, modernized restrooms, and other improvements are part of the HAM Upgrade modernization program, making travel more enjoyable and stress-free for passengers of all ages.
