Stars-like glow-worms emerge in New Zealand's Ruakuri Cave
Hey there! Let's dive into the enchanting journey of Jane McMichael from Ontario, as she shares her incredible experience traveling to Aotearoa, New Zealand, back in March 2025. A destination that offers stunning landscapes, friendly locals, and endless opportunities for adventure, awaited Jane with open arms.
Jane had always been drawn to places where the people truly valued nature and the environment. Having loved Iceland for its commitment to preserving its environment, she knew New Zealand would be the perfect fit. With a sudden health scare putting her life in perspective, she felt an urgent longing to explore this pristine land.
The most awe-inspiring sight of her trip was Black Labyrinth water rafting in Ruakuri Cave, Waitomo, on the North Island. This cave, nature's architectural masterpiece, boasts mind-boggling formations, from limestone sculptures to stalactites. As water danced through the labyrinth, twisting and turning, they floated on their inner tubes, reaching deep canyons where torches were extinguished and glow-worms magically appeared, lighting up the night sky like constellations.
Feeling proud of herself, Jane took the leap of faith and jumped backward off the waterfall—an unforgettable experience! The journey culminated with a cozy mochaccino, overlooking the lush rainforest—the epitome of relaxation.
The half-day zip line experience in Kaikoura, courtesy of EcoZip Adventures, was Jane's favorite activity. Soaring over the tree canopy for hours, the adrenaline rush was indescribable. Guided by two lively local girls, she conquered her fears and reached new heights.
Jane's taste buds were on a journey of their own as well. After a long day of exploration, she found herself at Fiddlesticks Restaurant and Bar in Christchurch, where delicious dishes like crispy chicken, golden fries, and honey-roasted carrots were her highlight.
In New Zealand, the people were the most memorable aspect of her trip. Kiwis proved to be affable, laid-back, helpful, and exceedingly kind. The atmosphere was easygoing, unrushed, and devoid of selfishness, making her feel at ease. She encountered numerous stories of extraordinary acts of kindness, further confirming her newfound love for the Kiwi culture.
If you're planning a trip to Aotearoa in March, Jane advises soaking up the sunshine and experiencing the crisp temperatures, as the weather is typically perfect during this time. The Heavenly narrows will be bustling with visitors, but you can dodge the crowds by booking well in advance. Happy travels!
