Sweden Joins European Airlifter Initiative, Orders Four Embraer C-390s
Sweden has officially joined the trilateral European airlifter initiative, signing a contract on October 6, 2025, at Uppsala Air Base. The deal sees Sweden order four Embraer C-390 Millennium aircraft, with an option to purchase seven more, aiming to enhance interoperability and reduce costs across European air forces.
The C-390 Millennium, already in service with Portugal and Hungary, and on order with several European nations, has proven its capability with a reported 93% mission-capable rate and a 99% mission-completion rate. Sweden's acquisition strengthens its industrial cooperation with Brazil, complementing the Gripen program partnership.
The C-390 can carry up to 26 tonnes of payload and cruise at about 470 knots, making it suitable for various missions. It can also operate from semi-prepared runways, increasing its versatility. Sweden's decision to join the trilateral program with the Netherlands and Austria formalizes its April 2025 intent. The Netherlands acts as an agent representing other friendly nations in this strategic partnership. Slovakia is also advancing negotiations to select the C-390 for its air force.
With Sweden's signing, the C-390 Millennium continues to gain traction in Europe, with orders now placed by Sweden, the Netherlands, Austria, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Portugal, and Hungary. This collective procurement aims to accelerate deliveries, reduce costs, and improve interoperability, ultimately enhancing Europe's airlift capabilities.
