Thailand's revised diplomatic approach, now spearheaded by Lekha Shankar: Soft Power Strategy
Thailand's Soft Power initiative, a national strategy aimed at promoting cultural heritage, tourism, and the creative economy, is currently in the spotlight. Launched by former Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, this initiative has been reinvigorated and is making significant strides, despite a temporary suspension by the Constitutional Court.
Current Status
The SPLASH Soft Power Forum, organised by the Thailand Creative Culture Agency (THACCA), is a key event that aims to showcase Thailand's creative sectors, including film, food, art, and wellness. The Bangkok Art Biennale (BAB) has also been a significant contributor to Thailand's vibrant art scene, featuring prominent Indian artists like Ravinder Reddy, thereby enhancing global recognition of Asian art.
The Indian Association of Thailand plays a pivotal role in fostering cultural ties and soft diplomacy, bridging India and Thailand through various collaborative events and tourism initiatives.
Future Plans
Upcoming events in Bangkok include the International Festival of Dance and Music and the World Film Festival of Bangkok, both with strong Indian participation anticipated. Thailand's Soft Power initiative continues to emphasize cultural exchange, with a focus on promoting Thai cultural heritage globally.
Efforts to boost tourism include diversifying payment methods for international visitors, such as the "TouristDigiPay" program, which aligns with the Soft Power policy.
Nakhon Pathom: A Cultural and Tourist Hub
Nakhon Pathom, one of Thailand's 11 designated Herbal Cities, offers an ideal day trip for Indian tourists. It is home to temples, spas, great food, and family-friendly activities. RXV Wellness Spa, for instance, offers unique therapies like crystal sound and aquatic therapies. The Doobua Café & Farm, a family-friendly spot with animals, a lake, numerous activities, and great organic food, is also being developed into a boutique hotel. Pathom Organic Village is ideal for farm experiences and corporate retreats, while Air Orchid Farm offers reasonably-priced, export-grade orchids, already discovered by Indian tourists and entrepreneurs.
In conclusion, Thailand's Soft Power initiative is actively engaging international partners, including India, to enhance cultural collaboration, tourism, and economic development. The initiative's focus on promoting Thai cultural heritage, art, and wellness, as showcased in events like the SPLASH Soft Power Forum and the Bangkok Art Biennale, is creating a global impact. The future looks promising, with upcoming festivals and events set to further strengthen cultural ties between Thailand and India.
