In the vast and diverse landscapes of our planet, a treasure trove of gemstones awaits discovery. From the ancient mines of South America to the gem islands of the Indian Ocean, the world's leading countries for gemstone production offer a rich tapestry of natural beauty and historical significance.

Brazil, covering 47% of South America's landmass and home to almost 4,100 airports, is a vast area ripe for gem hunting. The country is renowned for its extensive variety of gemstones, including aquamarine, alexandrite, almandine, amazonite, and many more. Brazilian amethyst geodes, in particular, are exceptionally large and are considered the yardstick by which all other aquamarine material is measured.

Sri Lanka, known as the "Gem Island," is another gemstone-rich destination. Famous for its sapphires, particularly the renowned blue Ceylon sapphires, Sri Lanka produces a wide variety of high-quality gemstones. The Ampara District, with its beautiful coastline, offers a relaxing holiday experience alongside fascinating faceting operations.

Colombia, renowned for its exceptional emeralds, is another must-visit destination. Colombian emeralds are some of the most sought-after globally due to their rich green hue and excellent transparency. The Muzo, Coscuez, and Chivor mines have produced emeralds for over 500 years, cementing Colombia's reputation for quality.

Tanzania, the sole source of tanzanite, offers a unique gemstone prized for its rarity and vivid blue-violet color. Found only in the Mererani Hills near Mount Kilimanjaro, tanzanite is a gemstone that captures the spirit of adventure.

Afghanistan, with its rich history dating back over 6,000 years, is famous for its lapis lazuli. Top-grade lapis from the Badakhshan region was historically considered more valuable than gold.

Botswana stands out among diamond producers for its high-quality diamonds, primarily from the Jwaneng and Orapa mines. Although it produces fewer diamonds than Russia, Botswana's stones are more valuable and regarded for their quality.

Russia, the largest diamond producer by volume, is also significant for its gemstone diversity, including diamonds and lapis lazuli. With its extensive geological diversity, Russia could potentially have undiscovered gemstones waiting to be found.

Canada, known for its ethical mining practices, produces high-quality, traceable diamonds from mines like Diavik and Ekati. These diamonds are appreciated for their ethical sourcing and clarity.

Australia, despite the closure of its famous Argyle pink diamond mine in 2020, remains a top diamond producer. Historically, its rare pink diamonds were highly prized, and the country still produces other notable gemstones, such as opal and sapphire.

Burma (Myanmar) is known for its jade, ruby, sapphire, spinel, and rare gemstones. Zimbabwe offers a variety of gemstones including emerald, garnet, aquamarine, malachite, tourmaline, tiger's eye, and quartz.

Exploring these gemstone-rich locations can present challenges, such as harsh weather, dangerous wildlife, and difficult living conditions. However, for the gemmologist or the gemstone enthusiast, the rewards of discovering these treasures make the journey worthwhile.

For those seeking to learn more about gemstones, the Gem-A Gemmology Foundation and Gemmology Diploma courses offer opportunities to delve deeper into the world of gems. And who knows? Your dream holiday could lead you to the discovery of the next rare and valuable gemstone.

Charles Evans FGA DGA, operations manager at Gem-A, is considering the best gemstone-producing countries for a gemmologist's dream holiday. With so many options to choose from, the decision is a difficult one, but the adventure awaits those willing to take the first step.
