Tourism turmoil on Lake Garda: Absence of German vacationers persists

Lake Garda, a picturesque destination nestled between high mountains and green plains in Italy, is facing a challenging 2024 tourism season, particularly for German tourists. The combination of the closure of the Europa Bridge and rising inflation has disrupted travel plans and increased costs, leading to a decrease in German visitors.

The closure of the Europa Bridge, a crucial transit route from Germany to northern Italy, has caused logistical difficulties and longer travel times, deterring German tourists. Meanwhile, inflation has escalated travel costs and living expenses, making Lake Garda a less affordable option for budget-conscious German tourists.

Fabio Pasqualini, a tour operator, and Virginia Torre, president of the hoteliers of Lazise, have both reported a decline in bookings from German tourists. Torre has also highlighted increased prices as a contributing factor to the tourism slump in Lake Garda.

Despite these challenges, Lake Garda remains an attractive destination, with its historic villages, ancient ruins, and castles attracting tourists from around the world. However, the absence of last-minute and week-ahead bookings from German tourists in August has had a significant impact on the 2024 season.

The tourism industry in Italy, which generated almost $56 billion in revenue from tourists in 2023 and employed over 1.5 million people, is feeling the effects of these developments. The Italian Tourism Ministry continues to promote Lake Garda as a top destination, but the current situation has been described as a "bitter summer" for tourism businesses due to the absence of Italians and Germans.

As of Friday afternoon, there are more than 3,000 hotel room options available for two people at Lake Garda on the booking.com platform in August, indicating a surplus of accommodations. This oversupply may be a result of the decrease in German tourists, with Germany accounting for 14 percent of international visitors to Italy in 2022, making it the second most popular travel destination for Germans after the Baltic Sea coast.

Looking ahead, the Italian Tourism Ministry will need to address these issues to revitalise the tourism industry at Lake Garda and attract more visitors, especially from Germany, in the future.
