Tulsa County Launches Gen Z-Focused STI Prevention Campaign

Tulsa County is launching a new public health campaign aimed at reducing the rate of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among young adults. The campaign, targeting Gen Z individuals aged 18 to 24, seeks to raise awareness about prevention tactics, testing, and treatment options. The initiative comes amidst a rising trend of STI cases in the U.S., with Oklahoma and Tulsa County being particularly affected.

Senior Director Leanne Stephens underscores the importance of relatable messaging and reaching audiences in their usual environments. The campaign, set to launch on May 15, 2023, will use a mix of digital, social media, outdoor, and streaming audio advertising to engage its target demographic. It will employ eye-catching graphics and Gen Z slang, along with QR codes on printed advertisements to direct users to a bilingual microsite.

The campaign aims to empower individuals to protect themselves through prevention measures, including condom use, with messaging tailored to Gen Z and available in Spanish. Associate Director Priscilla Haynes attributes the rise in STI cases to hookup culture and unhealthy relationships with risky behaviors. The goal is to drive awareness of proven prevention tactics, testing, and treatment options to combat the issue. According to the CDC, syphilis and congenital syphilis cases have shown significant increases since 2017, with Oklahoma ranking high for syphilis rates. Tulsa County alone reported 1,225 cases in 2021, costing $4.7 million annually.

The campaign, the first of its kind in Tulsa County, seeks to fill a gap in public health resources for STI prevention. It encourages individuals to take control of their sexual health and provides information about testing and treatment options. With its engaging approach and tailored messaging, the campaign hopes to make a significant impact on the rising STI rates in the area.
