Ontario's Primary Care Action Plan Expands to Elgin-Middlesex-London
Urgent investment: Province funds 5.3 million dollars for expanding primary care in Elgin-Middlesex-London area
The Ontario government's Primary Care Action Plan is set to expand in the Elgin-Middlesex-London region, aiming to connect thousands of residents with family doctors and nurse practitioners. The investment of $5.3 million is expected to eliminate the waitlist for the Oneida Nation of the Thames community and attach up to 12,600 residents to primary care providers locally.
This investment is part of the province's $2.1 billion Primary Care Action Plan, which aims to connect up to 300,000 people across Ontario with primary care providers this year. The initiative will be led by the Thames Valley Family Health Team (TVFHT), with the TVFHT making the most significant investment in primary care for the region in nearly two decades.
The TVFHT will work with eight Family Health Organizations, a Community Health Centre, and a Family Health Team to expand primary care access in the region. The Southwest Middlesex Health Centre, located near three Indigenous communities with significant gaps in primary care, is expected to play a key role in these efforts.
Priority will be given to neighbourhoods with the greatest needs, including rural and Indigenous communities. Chief Todd Cornelius of Oneida Nation of the Thames expects the investment to improve services for their community, while Mary Hay, executive director of the Southwest Middlesex Health Centre, states that there is a critical need for family doctors in the community.
The Primary Care Action Plan emphasizes team-based care, including models like Family Health Teams and Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics. The funding will help attach up to 12,600 residents in the Elgin-Middlesex-London region to primary care providers, reducing wait times and improving access to care.
Amber Alpaugh-Bishop of the Middlesex London Ontario Health Team stated that the need is critical due to a shortage of family doctors and nurse practitioners. The investment by the Ontario government is seen as long overdue by health-care providers in the region.
The expansion of primary care services in Elgin-Middlesex-London is expected to play a significant role in improving the health and well-being of residents in the region. For more information on specific initiatives and updates, residents are encouraged to stay informed through local health announcements and updates from regional health authorities.
