Vacation duration came to an end after a span of three hours.

In the heart of Sicily, a group of vacationers found their trip disrupted by an unfortunate incident at Catania Airport. The rental car they were using was broken into, and all their personal belongings, including wallets, laptops, cameras, headphones, watches, keys, and clothes were stolen. The rental car was also missing its back left side window and the backpacks.

The incident occurred on a day that should have been spent exploring the island's beauty. Instead, the vacation party spent Monday at the police station, the car rental, and left with a relieving report and restaurant recommendations for Noto, famous for its world-renowned Caffè Sicilia.

On the return flight, the vacationer's nerves were still on edge due to the lost ID. Fortunately, Easyjet showed understanding and allowed the vacationer to fly with a copy of the ID and a police report out of goodwill.

The theft from a rental car can be a complex issue when it comes to insurance coverage. Theft from a rental car is covered by Theft Protection (TP), Loss Damage Waiver (LDW)/Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) when theft coverage is included, or by your own comprehensive insurance if applicable. Conditions for coverage generally require securing the vehicle properly, timely police reporting, and compliance with rental agreement rules. Deductibles or excess payments usually apply unless you purchase full coverage options.

In this case, the 750 euro deductible for the damage to the other car was temporarily waived. However, the question of who would cover the cost of the stolen items remained.

It was not possible to file a police report on Sunday, and the police were not immediately contacted. An empty backpack was found outside the apartment building, and a chase was initiated to locate the stolen items. The headphones were tracked to an apartment building in Catania.

The vacation continued, with visits to Ragusa and Noto, UNESCO World Heritage sites. Despite the initial setback, the group found solace in the beauty of Sicily, with Pizzuta Beach identified as the best beach visited.

A lesson learned from this experience is the importance of understanding insurance coverage for rental cars. It's crucial to know what is and isn't covered, and to take necessary precautions to secure your vehicle and belongings. With Allianz, valuables like cash, jewelry, laptops, and clothes are insured against theft from a locked car, provided they are not visible from outside and are kept in the glove compartment or trunk.

The vacation ended on a high note, with the group returning home with memories of Sicily's beauty and a newfound appreciation for the importance of insurance coverage.

  1. Although the vacationers had initially planned to explore the 'home-and-garden' of Sicily, their trip took an unexpected turn when their rental car was broken into at Catania Airport, causing a disruption in their 'lifestyle'.
  2. On the return flight, the vacationers were still dealing with the aftermath of the theft, as they were advised to travel with a copy of their ID and a police report, due to the lost ID, by 'general-news' and 'crime-and-justice' sources.
