Volkswagen's iconic Split Screen campervans will grace the Goodwood Revival stage in September, and participants are welcome to join.

The Goodwood Revival, a gathering of classic vehicles, is set to celebrate the variety of Volkswagen Type 2 Split Screen campervans from 12-14 September at the Goodwood Circuit near Chichester. This annual event, known for its nostalgic atmosphere, will feature a daily parade of these iconic vehicles, each opening the track each morning in colorful fashion.

First produced in 1950, the Volkswagen Type 2 Split Screen campervan, affectionately called the "Splitty," is a cultural phenomenon. Its defining feature, the distinctive split front windshield, gave the van a unique, "bugeyed" look and improved airflow through pivoting safari-style windows, making it perfect for road trips and warm climates. Over nearly two decades, this early Type 2 became an instantly recognizable and cherished vehicle, loved for its vintage style, handcrafted details, and nostalgic appeal.

The Type 2 van's original inspiration came from Dutch Volkswagen importer Ben Pon Sr., who sketched the idea after visiting the VW factory to discuss imports. This sparked the development of what would become a cult classic symbolizing freedom and adventure, especially as a campervan. Over the years, it left a lasting mark on automotive history as a versatile vehicle for both transport and leisure, often associated with the campervan lifestyle.

The Goodwood Revival event will showcase a wide variety of Volkswagen Type 2 Split Screen models, representing the history of the VW camper's development since its inception 75 years ago. These vehicles will not only be found parading on the track but also across the Revival site, adding to the event's vintage charm.

For those who own a Volkswagen Type 2 Split Screen campervan, there's an opportunity to participate in the parade. Early bird tickets for the Goodwood Revival event are now available on the Goodwood website, ensuring you don't miss out on this celebration of automotive history.

In a statement, the Duke of Richmond CBE DL, founder of the Goodwood Revival, expressed his excitement for this year's event, saying, "We are thrilled to celebrate the variety of Volkswagen Type 2 Split Screen campervans at this year's Goodwood Revival. These iconic vehicles embody post-war innovation and cultural symbolism, and we are looking forward to showcasing their versatility and charm at the event."

The 2026 Grand California launch is set to take place at Düsseldorf's Caravan Salon later this month, marking a new chapter in Volkswagen's campervan legacy. As we look forward to the future, let us not forget the iconic vehicles that have shaped our love for motorhomes, such as the Volkswagen Type 2 Split Screen campervan.
