World ranks Portugal second in comedy, globally recognized for its humor.

In a groundbreaking study conducted by Remitly in 2025, the humour styles of 31 nations were analysed and ranked based on an average humor score out of 112. The research, which was developed in partnership with psychology expert Dr Rod Martin, aimed to explore the diversity of humour across the globe and how it acts as a universal bridge between cultures.

The Czech Republic emerged as the world's funniest nation, with a humor score of 72.33. Known for its dry wit, self-deprecating humour, and perfectly timed sarcasm, the Czech Republic's humour is described as particularly clever and capable of catching people off guard.

Portugal follows closely in second place, with a national sense of humour that blends clever wordplay, light teasing, and a warm, socially intelligent style. Belgium ranks fourth, known for its balanced and subtle sense of humour, while Ireland takes third place, praised for its storytelling charm and high scores in affiliative and self-enhancing humour.

The study also revealed some surprising results. The United States, for example, ranked 29th, favouring self-enhancing humour. In contrast, the United Kingdom ranked 18th, showing moderate scores across all humour styles.

The research evaluated four distinct humour styles: affiliative, self-enhancing, aggressive, and self-deprecating. Ryan Riley, VP of Marketing for EMEA and APAC at Remitly, noted that humour is often the first bridge between people, helping to break the ice, build trust, and create shared moments that make people feel heard and understood.

The study surveyed over 6,000 participants across 31 countries and measured the frequency of each humour style in daily life. Chile and Greece share fifth place, recognised for their expressive and inclusive humour styles. Australia, Poland, Denmark, Hungary, and Greece also feature in the top 10.

While the study did not specify the exact criteria used to rank the nations, it highlighted how humour uniquely characterises different cultures worldwide. Unfortunately, the study did not discuss the potential long-term effects of humour on cross-cultural interactions.

The findings of this study are particularly relevant for expats, travellers, and remote workers, as humour helps people connect, build friendships, and feel at ease in unfamiliar settings. The full findings of the study can be accessed on Remitly's official website.

Travelers and expats in Portugal might find it fascinating to know that the nation's lifestyle includes a unique blend of clever wordplay, light teasing, and a warm, socially intelligent humor, ranking Portugal second in the world, just behind the Czech Republic. This research, conducted by Remitly in 2025, offers insights into how humor acts as a universal bridge between cultures, making Portugal an interesting destination for those seeking a rich cultural experience with a touch of humor.
