Yearly gathering of the tourism sector: CII's 18th Tourism Summit in 2024

The tourism industry in India is gearing up for a transformative year ahead, with the 18th CII Annual Tourism Summit 2024 scheduled for Wednesday, 18 December 2024, in New Delhi. This high-profile event will bring together industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators to redefine India's tourism landscape.

The summit will focus on critical issues such as enhancing ease of doing business, boosting inbound tourism, and showcasing state-level best practices. A key emphasis will be on employment and skill development, with the launch of the CII-EY Report on Employment Landscape in the Tourism and Hospitality Industry.

India's tourism sector has seen significant growth in recent years. In 2023, foreign tourist arrivals reached over 9.2 million, marking a 43.5% year-on-year increase. Employment in the sector grew by 10% to 43 million jobs. The sector's contribution to GDP reached ₹19.13 trillion in 2023, surpassing pre-pandemic levels by nearly 10%. Foreign exchange earnings from tourism exceeded ₹2.3 lakh crore in 2023, a 65.7% rise compared to the previous year.

The Government of India has been instrumental in boosting India's global appeal. Initiatives like the 'Incredible India' campaign, Swadesh Darshan, Dekho Apna Desh, Vibrant Village Programme, and facilitative visa regimes have played a significant role in this growth. These efforts have resulted in an improvement in India's ranking on the World Economic Forum's Travel and Tourism Development Index (TTDI) to 39th among 119 countries in 2024.

Looking forward, the recently announced strategies like Paryatan Didi, Paryatan Mitra, Incredible India Content Hub, and Government-Industry-Academia collaborations are aimed at further enhancing tourism. Strategies targeting niche segments like MICE, medical, adventure, and rural tourism are designed to position India as a year-round destination.

India aspires to rank among the top 10 global tourism destinations by 2030 and the top 3 by 2047. To realise this potential, measures such as easing regulatory and licensing burdens, reducing compliance costs, efficient approval systems, and fostering investments are crucial.

The 18th CII Annual Tourism Summit 2024 aims to chart a strategic roadmap for transforming India's tourism potential into actionable outcomes. Key politicians and policymakers attending the event include prominent Indian government officials such as the Minister of Tourism and representatives from the Ministry of Tourism, alongside industry leaders and policymakers from both national and international tourism sectors.
